“Everything was on fire”: Disgust and the Environment in The Road.

As the environmental crisis reaches critical levels, more and more activists, politicians, and citizens are asking, “how do we make people care?”  In my essay, I investigate whether or not disgust is a useful emotional affect that creates environmental concern in The Road.

  1. I enjoyed your presentation yesterday very much, Trisha. I agree that, without ever becoming at all didactic, McCarthy does send subtle messages about the consequences of human depravity not only on fellow humans, but on the environment as well. The Road is such a haunting book. And if you think that one’s disturbing, check out Blood Meridian!
